Your rights as a Deaf buyer or seller
Do I have the right to an ASL interpreter during real estate transactions?
Yes. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act, you have the right to effective communication throughout your real estate experience. This includes the right to request a qualified ASL interpreter for meetings, negotiations, and closings. A real estate professional or title company cannot deny you this accommodation. If you are working with a lender or title company, they are required under Title III of the ADA to provide auxiliary aids and services regardless of their business size.
Can a real estate agent or lender legally refuse to work with me because I am Deaf?
No. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on disability, which includes being Deaf or hard of hearing. It is illegal for any agent, lender, title company, or housing provider to refuse services, offer worse terms, or treat you differently because of your hearing status. If you experience discrimination, you can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) at hud.gov/fairhousing.
Am I entitled to written communication throughout my transaction?
Absolutely. You can request that all important communications including offers, counteroffers, disclosures, and instructions be provided in writing. Any reputable agent should already be doing this as standard practice. If an agent or lender is unwilling to communicate in writing when you request it, that is a red flag and may be a violation of your rights.
What if a lender says they cannot accommodate me?
That is not acceptable. Mortgage lenders are covered under the Fair Housing Act and must provide reasonable accommodations. You have the right to work with a lender who communicates accessibly, whether that means email, text, video relay, written documents, or a qualified interpreter at closing. The ASL Real Estate Collective directory includes ASL-fluent and Deaf-friendly mortgage lenders who are experienced in serving our community.
Finding an ASL-fluent agent
How do I find a real estate agent who uses ASL?
The ASL Real Estate Professional Map on our website is the easiest way. It connects Deaf buyers, sellers, and investors with agents, lenders, inspectors, title companies, and contractors who are ASL-fluent or Deaf-friendly, all in one place. You can search by location and professional type to find someone in your area.
What is the difference between ASL-fluent and Deaf-friendly?
An ASL-fluent professional communicates natively or fluently in American Sign Language. A Deaf-friendly professional may not sign fluently but is experienced working with Deaf clients, comfortable with interpreters, and committed to accessible communication practices including written communication, video relay, and patience throughout the process. Both categories are vetted and listed in our directory.
What should I look for when choosing a real estate agent?
Beyond ASL fluency, look for an agent who communicates clearly in writing, provides all documents in advance so you can review them, is transparent about timelines and next steps, never rushes you through decisions, and understands your local market. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. Your agent should make you feel fully informed and in control every step of the way.
What if there is no ASL-fluent agent in my area?
We are growing our directory every month. In the meantime, you can still work with a Deaf-friendly agent and arrange for a qualified interpreter at key meetings. You can also reach out to us directly. We may be able to connect you with an agent who works remotely or can refer you to someone in your market. Our mission is to make sure no Deaf buyer or seller is left without support.
How the ASL Professional Map works
What is the ASL Real Estate Professional Map?
The map is a searchable, nationwide directory connecting Deaf and hard of hearing clients with ASL-fluent or Deaf-friendly real estate professionals. It includes agents, mortgage lenders, home inspectors, title companies, real estate attorneys, and contractors, covering every professional you might need throughout a real estate transaction.
Are Realtors listed publicly on the map?
To protect agent privacy and comply with Realtor association guidelines, licensed Realtors are listed anonymously on the map. Their general location and qualifications are visible, but their personal contact information is not displayed publicly. Non-Realtor professionals such as lenders, inspectors, and contractors may be listed with full contact details.
How do I contact a professional I find on the map?
When you find a professional you are interested in, you can submit a connection request through the map. For Realtor listings, we facilitate the introduction directly. For other professionals, contact information is provided on their listing. We want to make sure every connection is smooth and that you feel comfortable before any conversation begins.
How do professionals get listed on the map?
Real estate professionals apply to be listed through TCS Real Estate International, our agent development and education platform. We verify their ASL fluency or Deaf-friendly experience before they are added to the directory. If you are a professional who wants to be listed, visit tcsrealestateinternational.com to learn more.
Is the map available nationwide?
Yes. The map covers professionals across all 50 states. We are continuously adding new professionals as our network grows. If your area has limited coverage right now, please reach out. We are actively recruiting and training professionals to fill gaps in underserved markets.
